A Dangerous Glacier Grows Inside Mount St. Helens' Crater

A Dangerous Glacier Grows Inside Mount St. Helens' Crater A precarious glacier in the crater of Mount St. Helens grows at an unprecedented rate, posing potential danger to the valley below. A group of adventurous researchers visits the crater to investigate and gets a rare up-close look at the odd co-existence of glaciers, boiling rivers and steam vents that are reshaping the landscape at a rapid pace. Originally broadcast in 2004.

OPB is revisiting decades of stories our reporters and producers captured while working with scientists, photographers, adventurers and explorers on the volcano since its eruption on May 18, 1980.
