In September 1943, the Nazi occupied Rome. A month later, a special unit of the SS paid a visit to the Synagogue and Rabbinical College. Returning the next day, they confiscated thousands of valuable and irreplaceable books and manuscripts, some dating back to the Middle Ages, and sent the collections to Frankfurt. The fate of the libraries is one of the lesser-known stories of World War II.
