What is a nation-state?

What is a nation-state? This explanation of the meaning of the term "nation-state" is part of a digital video library of concepts for my new book. Its title is Hatching the Nation-State, to be released by Nimble Books www.nimblebooks.com on November 16, 2009. "Nation-state" is a term used by political scientists to capture four ideas. "Nation" refers to the people of any given country. The word also means the idea that people have of their country and their membership in it. "State" means the government of the country and also the territory any given nation-state inhabits and controls. The book proposes that four historical properties of the nation-state must evolve for the nation-state as a political institution to survive forces of globalization.
