Hi! My name is Hannah, and I have to let you in on a little secret: I’m not really deaf… but I made everyone believe I was!
How did this come to happen? And was I caught in my lies? Well, let me tell you all about this crazy story that started after I was forced to change schools!
You see, I’ve always been a big gossip. I love spilling tea, I can’t help myself! Every time there was a problem at my school linked to rumors, I was blamed immediately. More often than not, I really was behind the whole mess.
So I begged my parents to transfer me to another school. Students hated me and no one wanted to even speak to me, too worried that I’d let everyone else know their secrets. I felt so alone, and my mom and dad decided that I needed a fresh start.

I know, I know. I should have been good and really change my ways. But I didn’t! I simply couldn’t help myself!
Well, the thing was, I needed to have an advantage and avoid everyone realizing I was the one listening in to their secrets. So what better way to do this than to have people think I couldn’t hear at all?!
On my very first day of school, I pretended I was deaf, and everyone believed me! The fact that a new deaf girl had arrived from another district soon spread. I found it amusing how fast I was having a rumor be spread, without even being the one to utter a single word about it!
I was surprised by how nice everyone was around me. They placed me on several grant programs as time went by, and since my parents traveled a lot for work, they never discovered my lies!
I have to be honest, at first, I just planned to let everyone know it was a prank after a week or two. After discovering how many benefits I had and how many secrets I could hear without anyone suspecting me, I changed my mind. It was too amazing to give up on everything I had been given thanks to my so-called disability.
So I kept up the act, and everyone spoke freely around me, thinking that it was completely safe to say just about anything!
All I had to do was stand somewhere and look the other way. People at first would say things like “Hey, wait, there’s someone there. I’ll talk to you about this later”. But then the other student would look my way and explain that I couldn’t hear a thing, so it was safe. Then they’d keep talking about something I shouldn’t know about. It was amazing!
What was even cooler was that I pretended to be able to read lips, so I didn’t have to bother with sign language or anything like that.
You wouldn’t believe the things I discovered simply by standing close to unsuspecting people. It was such a brilliant plan that I didn’t understand how I hadn’t thought about it before. Everyone was hyper nice toward me and I got endless supplies of gossips!
I discovered that one of my teachers was having an affair with the lunch lady! That’s how he got his lunches for free even though each sandwich cost $6.75 at that school! If you ask me, that’s a pretty hefty benefit!
Some rumors were really juicy and even nasty! Apparently, coach Jack was taking bribes from wealthy parents to allow football players who were doing badly academically to keep playing. At my school, you had to maintain a certain GPA to be on the team, and he made sure that this never became a problem.
