I used to worry a lot about doing research that somebody else has done before. You often hear that there are twin discoveries for your research, and there is research on twin discoveries. I thought that I would not get credit for do a bunch of work. What happens when you discover someone is doing something that is similar to you? You feel anxiety, jealousy, and many other emotions.
However, I have since discovered that having research in the same area is a wonderful opportunity. What does this mean?
1. You probably are at the start of your research journey and have not thought about how your research is different from others.
2. This means that there are considerable opportunities for growth in the field. It means that there are active researchers in the field that can help you.
3. It also means that you ought to continue with the research. You will likely find considerably different things than what the other person found.
4. You have to come at the research at a different angle - use a different theoretical angle to your research to make a larger contribution.
5. You can come up with an original idea by positioning relative to their work, and the weaknesses of their work.
6. The other researchers are likely going to be your reviewers, so build on their work.
