This is POWERFUL- How a COVID19 nurse is managing her own anxiety When I received this note from Nurse Jen about how she’s using the 5 Second Rule to manage her own anxiety and fears as a critical care nurse in a COVID19 ICU, I knew I had to talk to her.

Here’s what she said in the letter: “I have 5-4-3-2-1’ed so much in the past week, not to motivate myself to make change, but to combat the mental terror and keep going. It’s not always about making habit change; sometimes you’re only five seconds away from falling apart, and taking one breath, counting down, and realigning makes all the difference. I counted away the fear, and I found the strength I needed to move forward.

You thought you gave the world a tool to change habits, but you gave me so much more. You gave me the power to grab five seconds and transform fear into power. At any moment in the day, I am five seconds from pulling strength from a place inside myself that is overshadowed by doubt. Five tiny seconds are more powerful than I ever knew.”
