President Shagari Stopover in Kaduna | En Route to Abuja Nigeria's Proposed Capital | October 1979 Saturday, October 25th 1979.

Footage of Alhaji Shehu Shagari, the newly elected civilian president of Nigeria, on a stopover at Kaduna Airport while en route to Abuja, the proposed new capital of the federation.

Reuters Text:

"President Shagari was welcomed at the airport by Kaduna's State Governor, Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa.. During his visit, he held discussions with the Governor and members of the State's House of Assembly.

The Guard of Honour was mounted by a detachment of the Nigerian army. The President will pay a two-day official visit to Abuja, the proposed Federal capital. President Shagari says he agrees with the previous military regime that the capital should be changed, as Lagos has become congested.

The military heads of the infantry divisions at Kaduna and a number of senior government officials were also present for the Presidential visit. Accompanying President Shagari were several senior Federal government ministers. While in Abuja, the President will visit the Federal Capital Development Authority, the proposed site for the National Assembly complex, Jabi Dam and Sheda Simulium Research Centre."
